Marta May | Systemic and Family Psychotherapist

Children & Families

Marta is a Systemic and Family Psychotherapist with extensive specialist experience in treating eating disorders in both children and adults. She is registered with the United Kingdom Council of Psychotherapy (UKCP) and with the Association of Family Therapy (AFT).

Marta is currently employed in the Child and Young People Community Eating Disorder Service in Surrey as a Highly Specialist Systemic and Family Psychotherapist and is the Systemic Team Lead. She supervises the whole team in delivering Family Based Treatment (FBT) and is contributing to the ongoing development of the service by setting up a Sibling support group which was the topic of her Masters research. She has also set up and run Parent support groups in the past. Marta’s wide experience means she has worked with children of all ages.

Marta’s interest in eating disorders first developed in 2011, when working as a health care assistant on an adult inpatient eating disorder unit in London. There she gained first-hand experience of working with men and women with longstanding conditions which were severe enough to require hospitalisation. Marta worked with the patients at their most distressed, supporting them through meals and weight restoration. Inspired by the work she was doing, Marta started her Systemic Family Therapy Training whilst working on the inpatient ward and was supervised by the Lead Family Therapist there.

Marta also has experience in other areas of Family Therapy. She volunteered at the Wimbledon Guild Family Therapy Service for four years, working with couples and families exploring difficult relationship dynamics.
