What is Developmental Coordination Disorder (previously known as Dyspraxia)
Developmental Coordination Disorder (previously known as dyspraxia), is a common condition that affects movement and coordination. Children with Developmental Coordination Disorder have difficulties learning everyday motor tasks, which can impact daily activities and schoolwork.
Signs of Developmental Coordination Disorder in children
Early Milestone Delays
Crawling, walking, self-feeding, or dressing may happen later than peers
Milestones like tying shoelaces, using cutlery, or writing are often delayed
Gross Motor Coordination Issues
Frequent clumsiness: bumping into things, falling over, tripping
Struggles with balance, running, jumping, hopping, catching a ball
Tends to avoid sports, team games and physical activity due to difficulties
Other signs include
Difficulty concentrating, following instructions and copying information
Difficulty with organisational skills
Being slow to pick up new skills
Behavioural problems/ low self esteem due to frustration about symptoms
Social difficulties due to avoidance of activities, may be targeted by bullying due to differences and clumsiness.
