Art therapy at our clinic in London.

Art Psychotherapy uses creative expression as a means of communication. As with talking therapies, a person is offered a consistent, safe and non-judgemental space in which to express and explore their thoughts, feelings and difficulties that may be impacting their lives and relationships.

Psychotherapy takes place within a therapeutic relationship, where a person is responded to with empathy and curiosity to support them to safely make contact with aspects of their experience that can feel difficult. The work involves a collaborative approach to address a person’s individual needs and concerns and takes place at the depth and pace that feels right to them.

Are artistic skills Needed?

No previous experience or artistic skill is needed to benefit from Art Psychotherapy – art materials are available to use but there is no pressure to do so. Artworks are considered in terms of their personal meaning rather than their aesthetic quality.

Art Psychotherapy is offered widely in the National Health Service, education and in the 3rd sector for people of all ages. Art Psychotherapists are state-registered professionals who have undertaken a recognised training qualification and receive regular clinical supervision from senior clinicians. Art Psychotherapists are regulated by the Health Care Professions Council (HCPC).

How can art therapy help?

It can sometimes be difficult to articulate certain feelings and experiences through talking alone.

The images and objects made in Art Psychotherapy can be explored to gain insight into complex emotions and how they may link with actions. As well as supporting emotional regulation, Art Psychotherapy can be a helpful way of organising confusing and conflicting experiences into a more coherent narrative.

Art Psychotherapy can support with:

  • Difficulties in attachments and peer relationships

  • Withdrawal, depression and anxiety

  • Risky behaviour and self-harm

  • Struggles with identity and self-esteem
