What to expect during a General Psychiatry Assessment

  • Our general psychiatry assessments include a 90 minute appointment with a psychiatrist. This will explore:

    •  Information about physical health, family history, description and impact of symptoms and any previous child or adult diagnosis or treatment approaches.

    • Your psychiatrist will work with you to gain an understanding of what you or your child has been experiencing by asking questions about mental state and wellbeing. This includes observing behaviour, discussing thoughts and feelings, and evaluating cognitive and emotional functioning.

    • A discussion about family and personal history aims to gain a deeper understanding to provide appropriate treatment recommendations.

    • You will receive feedback during the appointment about whether the psychiatrist believes a diagnosis is appropriate.

    • This will be followed by a full written report within two weeks

    • Following the assessment your Psychiatrist will consider your individual profile of need and symptom management when devising a treatment plan that is completely personalised to you.

    • Possible treatment routes include psychiatric treatment to target specific symptoms, psychological intervention (e.g. CBT) and lifestyle adaptations.

    • A combination of these is usually most effective and your Psychiatrist will tailor a treatment plan specifically to your individual presentation.

    • Your Psychiatrist may refer you to another professional in our team for further support, for example  a psychologist, psychotherapist or family therapist.

Pricing will depend on the recommended assessment and intervention package.

A General Psychiatric Assessment is priced at  £1000.

General Psychiatry Service FAQS

  • To book a General Psychiatric Assessment, you will need to first complete a client registration form that will be reviewed by our clinical team to confirm next steps. If recommended, they will send you details for available slots and how to make payment and book the assessment.

  • Once your assessment is booked, you will be sent questionnaires in your booking confirmation to complete before your appointment. These must be completed 48 hours prior to the consultation to ensure we have sufficient information to complete the assessment.

  • The assessment will last around 90 minutes. For clients under 18 a parent/carer is required to be present for the duration of the appointment. Your psychiatrist may provide you with a diagnosis at the end of the appointment. If your child is under 14, and you would like the opportunity to speak with the Psychiatrist alone or to have this conversation without your child, please make sure to attend the assessment with another adult who can supervise your child in our waiting area as they must not be left without an adult at any point in clinic.

  • In most cases, you will receive feedback during the appointment about whether the psychiatrist believes a diagnosis is appropriate; however, in instances where more time is required, or where the psychiatrist would like to consult with other members of the multi-disciplinary team, it may be necessary to complete the feedback in a further session. Your psychiatrist will let you know during the assessment whether you will need to book another appointment, and this will be billed at their standard rate of £600 per hour, or £300 for 30 minutes.

  • Whether you receive a diagnosis or not, you will be sent a clinical report 2 weeks after your assessment, with details and results of your assessment process.

  • If you would like to access mediation, please contact our reception team who will provide you with the necessary information and next steps.

Please note that if you are prescribed medication a follow-up appointment and regular medication reviews are required to ensure any medication you have been prescribed is working well.

The cost of follow-up appointments with your psychiatrist are billed at their standard rate of £600 per hour, or £300 for 30 minutes.

Further reviews may be required and the frequency and duration of these can be agreed with your psychiatrist based on how you/your child is responding to the medication.

  • Your prescription will be sent to an online pharmacy ‘Cloud RX’. They will process the prescription, and you should expect the medication to be delivered directly to your home address at least 2 working days after your prescription has been provided. You will not be provided with paper prescriptions, as our current pharmacy is online.

  • You might not be in a position to always be able to pay for your medication, and may want to consider accessing the medication from your GP instead. Once a stable dose has been achieved, your GP may be willing to enter a ‘Shared Care Agreement’ to take over the prescribing of your medication/s however, this is at the complete discretion of your GP. If they decline, it will be necessary for you to continue to pay for your medication and attend medication follow up appointments with the Family Treatment Service.

If your GP is happy to agree to a shared care agreement, it will still be important that you are reviewed by your psychiatrist at a frequency agreed between your psychiatrist and GP.

We advise that you give some thought prior to choosing to access medication as to whether you are willing to maintain the payments yourself.

  • Our prescribers will aim to prescribe medication that ‘Cloud RX’ has available in stock, however at times they may become out of stock after the prescription has been sent out. If you are informed by Cloud RX that your medication is out of stock, please initially discuss with Cloud RX if there is anything they can do to help. If not, please get in touch with the clinic to discuss your options. It may be that the prescriber needs to consider prescribing you another medication, which may require another medication review appointment.

  • There may be times when Cloud RX has questions about your prescription which could delay you getting your medication on time. We will try our best to work with Cloud RX to clarify any details needed and get your medication to you as soon as possible.

  • The amount of medication you will be prescribed will be decided by your psychiatrist and will reflect the current stage of the prescribing process.

  • Please contact the clinic to request a repeat prescription at least 14 days before your medication runs out to ensure you receive your medication on time.

  • Please check any delivery/medication enquiries with Cloud RX prior to speaking with the clinic as we do not manage the delivery/ordering service. You can do this by contacting them on 0113 531 2942 or emailing pharmacy@cloudrx.co.uk

  • If you have received a diagnosis from another service, you may be able to receive medication through our prescribing service. You will need to complete a Client Registration Form and send us a copy of your previous report. Our clinical team will then be in touch with next steps.
