Gross Motor Skill Difficulties
What are gross motor skills?
Gross motor skills refers to the large movements of the body using major muscles in the arms, legs, and trunk. This starts from a baby’s earliest efforts to move and travel, to young children coordinating whole body movements.
These skills are essential for everyday tasks like walking, running, jumping, climbing, and balancing. They also contribute to a child's confidence, coordination, and ability to participate in play and learning.
Signs of difficulties with fine motor skills
Some children may have difficulties with activities that rely on gross motor skills such as handwriting, eating and self care. Signs may include:
Clumsiness: Frequent trips, bumps, or falls
Poor balance: Difficulty staying steady when standing or moving
Coordination problems: Problems with tasks like jumping, hopping, or skipping
Struggles with stairs: Needing support or unable to alternate feet
Weak core strength: Slouched posture when sitting or standing
Delayed milestones: Late to crawl, walk, or run
Fatigue: Easily tiring during physical activity
Avoids physical play: Reluctance to join games, PE, or sports
Difficulty with ball skills: Trouble throwing, catching, or kicking
Awkward or inefficient movement patterns: E.g., stiff arms when running
