Handwriting Assessment and Support

Handwriting is more than just putting pen to paper—it’s a combination of fine motor skills, visual perception, and language comprehension. These elements work together to help a child accurately form letters and words, allowing them to communicate effectively.

For a child to develop strong handwriting skills, they need a solid foundation in three key areas:

  • Language comprehension – Understanding, recalling, and correctly forming letters and words, as well as recognising how they should be spaced and aligned on a page.

  • Motor skills – Controlling the hands and fingers while stabilizing the shoulder, forearm, and core muscles to produce clear and legible writing.

  • Visual-perceptual skills – Recognising and interpreting lines, shapes, and letters on a page to accurately form words.
