Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD)
About OCD
Obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD) is a mental health condition where a person has obsessive thoughts and compulsive behaviours.
An obsession is an unwanted and unpleasant thought, image or urge that repeatedly enters your mind, causing feelings of anxiety, disgust or unease.
A compulsion is a repetitive behaviour or mental act that you feel you need to do to temporarily relieve the unpleasant feelings brought on by the obsessive thought. It is not long before the obsessive thoughts return and the cycle begins again, which can have a negative impact on family relationships, work, and previously enjoyed activities.
There is no single cause of OCD, and it can affect different people of all age groups. People suffering from OCD may also experience high levels of discomfort, low mood, depression and anxiety.
Symptoms of OCD may include:
Excessive hand washing
Constant checking
Mentally repeating phrases
Fear about home security
Fear of contamination by germs or chemicals
Fear of causing accidents or harming others
