Our approach to Educational Assessments

At The Family Treatment Service, we understand that barriers to learning come in many forms, and it is not always easy to know how to best support a child. That is why we created our Educational Support Service: a place where individuals can seek support for educational difficulties without needing to know exactly what’s causing them, or what “diagnosis” is required.

In some cases it may be necessary to have a formal diagnosis, whereas in others, the focus may be better spent on supporting change in the presenting difficulty for example direct work with the child or their teachers.

Rather than focusing on specific diagnosis, we encourage anyone who is experiencing challenges with learning, communication, attention, or other aspects of education to meet with an experienced Educational Psychologist and explore the options available to them and their child, and gain a deeper understanding of differing approaches in order to make an informed decision about how to proceed.

How our Educational Support Service Works

Whether it’s struggles with reading and writing, attention and focus, sensory processing, or communication, we take a holistic, person-centered approach to identifying the underlying needs and recommending tailored interventions.

The process aims to collaboratively explore your child’s strengths and understand areas of difficulty, resulting in a greater understanding of a problem, so that we can be thoughtful in our recommendations and ensure they best meet your goals and address the presenting difficulties.

Consultation is a staged approach to supporting a child or young person and typically involves the following stages:

The type of assessment(s) we recommend will depend on the outcome of the initial consultation, and may include the following:

  • Handwriting Assessment

Handwriting is more than just putting pen to paper—it’s a combination of fine motor skills, visual perception, and language comprehension. These elements work together to help a child accurately form letters and words, allowing them to communicate effectively.

  • ADHD Assessment

At The Family Treatment Service, we offer a bespoke and thoughtful ADHD service for children & Adolescents, from assessment to post-diagnosis support and prescribing at our London clinic.

  • Autism Assessments

Our Autism Assessments are collaborative, and we work with colleagues in specific fields of expertise such as mental health, speech and language therapy and sensory issues to ensure we can answer various questions and create a support plan for you.

  • Educational Psychology Assessment

Our Educational Psychology assessments aim to establish a clear picture of an individual's cognitive and learning profile and covers aspects including reasoning ability, working memory, processing speed. The exact type of assessment will depend on individual needs and may also explore maths ability, phonological processing and writing skills.

  • Speech & Language Assessment

A Speech & Language Assessment may be recommended for children experiencing difficulties or differences with any aspect of their speech, language or social communication.

  • Cognitive Assessments

A Cognitive Assessment can gain valuable insights into thinking, memory, and problem-solving skills. Alongside the cognitive assessment, we are also able to offer an optional add-on Specific Learning Difficulty Assessment.
